THE USE OF TOPONYMS IN MODERN MEDIA DISCOURSE: FUNCTIONAL-PRAGMATIC AND LINGUO-CULTURAL ASPECTS

The purpose of the study is to describe the characteristics and aspects of meaning that determine the use of toponymic units in modern English-language media discourse. The authors make an attempt to study the linguocultural and functional-pragmatic aspects of toponyms’ use in modern English-language media discourse. Place names are present in various contexts, however, within the framework of modern media, these lexical units perform a number of functions that are actively used by addressees. With the help of toponyms, a certain pragmatic impact is exerted on the addressee, since these language units are of great importance for the culture and history of the people. The relevance of the study is due to the consideration of toponyms from the point of view of their linguocultural and functional-pragmatic aspects of meaning which is nowadays a popular vector of linguistic research. The results are determined by the collected and analyzed material based on English-language periodicals of 2022–2024. The object of the study was toponymic units functioning in British, American and Australian newspaper articles and headlines.
