CASE STUDY: REPAIR OF A CATEGORY II PRESSURE VESSEL

This study addresses the repair of a Category II pressure vessel used in margarine hydrogenation within a food industry, regulated by NR-13 standards. The research explores methods to ensure the structural integrity and operational safety of pressure vessels operating with high-risk fluids like hydrogen. The methodology includes periodic inspections, repair design and execution, as well as extraordinary inspections using non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques such as liquid penetrant and ultrasound. The process involved metallographic analyses, hardness measurements, and technical calculations for sizing the reinforcement plate and evaluating the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP), all performed in strict compliance with ASME PCC-II standards. In conclusion, the repair, combined with proper inspection and maintenance practices, is effective in restoring and extending the service life of pressure vessels. The research highlights the importance of proactively managing structural failures and implementing regulatory procedures to prevent industrial accidents.
